Hockey Trak Quick Start Guide

Welcome to Hockey Trak! This guide will help you set up teams, add players, start a game, and track live hockey stats right away.


Features at a Glance

  • Live Game Tracking – Record every action with a real-time game clock and scoreboard.
  • Goal Tracking – Log goals with strength type (Even Strength, Power Play, Short-handed, Empty Net) and up to 2 assists.

  • Reports – View game summaries, goal breakdowns, goalie stats, leaderboards, and more.
  • Settings – Customize defaults for faster setup.

Navigate through the app using the menu bar.


Step 1: Create Your Teams

  1. Tap Teams in the menu bar.
  2. Tap the ➕ Add button.
  3. Enter details:
    • Team Name (required).
    • Location (optional).
    • Team Type (Home or Opponent).
  4. Tap Save.

👉 Your new team will appear in the team list. Tap a team to edit or delete it.


Step 2: Add Players to a Team

  1. Open a team from the Teams screen.
  2. Tap the Players icon in the menu bar.
  3. Tap ➕ Add and enter:
    • Player Name (required).
    • Player Number (required, 0–99).
    • Position (optional, e.g., G, RD, LD, C, RW, LW).
    • Starter (toggle on for players who start on the ice).
    • Photo (optional).
  4. Tap Save.

👉 Players appear in the roster and will be available during games. Standard hockey positions are G (Goalie), RD (Right Defense), LD (Left Defense), C (Center), RW (Right Wing), LW (Left Wing). Mark 6 players as starters per team.


Step 3: Create a Game

  1. Tap Games in the menu bar.
  2. Tap ➕ Add.
  3. Enter game details:
    • Game Title (required).
    • Date & Time (required).
    • Location (optional).
    • Home Team (select from your home teams).
    • Opponent Team (select from your opponent teams).
  4. Tap Next to save and open the Live Game Tracking screen.

👉 The home team must have at least one starter player before you can create the game.


Step 4: Track the Game

The Live Game Tracking screen is your command center during a game:

  • Left Sidebar – Home and Opponent player lists. Tap a player to select them before recording an action.
  • Scoreboard – Shows Home and Visitor scores, updated automatically when goals are recorded.
  • Game Clock – Use ▶ (start), ⏸ (pause), and ⏹ (stop/reset). Adjust time manually with the +/− minute and second buttons.
  • Period Selector – Choose 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or OT.

To record an action:

  1. Select a Player – Tap a player from the sidebar (highlighted when selected).
  2. Tap an Action Button – The action grid contains:
    • Row 1 (Offensive): Goal, Shot on Goal, Missed Shot, Blocked Shot
    • Row 2 (Defensive): Save, Hit, Takeaway, Giveaway
    • Row 3 (Special): Penalty, Faceoff Win, Faceoff Loss
  3. The action is logged and appears in the Play-by-Play section.

👉 You must select a player before tapping an action. An alert will appear if no player is selected.


Step 5: Record a Goal

When you tap the Goal button, a two-step popup appears:

  1. Select Strength Type:
    • Even Strength – Both teams at full strength.
    • Power Play – Scored while your team has a man advantage.
    • Short-handed – Scored while your team is a man down.
    • Empty Net – Scored against an empty net.
  2. Select Assists (0–2):
    • The popup shows all teammates of the goal scorer.
    • Tap up to 2 players to record primary and secondary assists.
    • Tap Done to save.

👉 The goal, strength type, and assists are all recorded in the Play-by-Play log. The score updates automatically.


Step 6: Record a Penalty

When you tap the Penalty button, a two-step popup appears:

  1. Select Penalty Duration:
    • Minor – 2 minutes.
    • Double Minor – 4 minutes.
    • Major – 5 minutes.
    • Misconduct – 10 minutes.
  2. Select Penalty Type:
    • Tripping, Hooking, Slashing, Cross Checking, Interference, Roughing, High Stick, Boarding, Charging, or Other.

👉 The penalty details (duration and type) are saved to the Play-by-Play log.


Step 7: Make Line Changes

  1. Tap the 🔄 Swap button at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  2. The Player Swap screen shows four grids: Home Active, Home Inactive, Opponent Active, Opponent Inactive.
  3. Tap a player card to toggle them on or off the ice.
  4. The active player count is displayed at the top of each section.
  5. Tap Done to save changes, or Cancel to discard.

👉 Standard hockey uses 6 players on the ice per team (1 goalie + 5 skaters). The app validates player counts when saving.


Step 8: Review the Play-by-Play

  • The Play-by-Play section at the bottom shows every recorded action with the period, team, player name, number, action, and timestamp.
  • Tap any entry to select it, then tap ↩ Undo to reverse that action.
  • The score recalculates automatically after an undo.

Step 9: View Reports

  1. Tap Reports in the menu bar.
  2. Available hockey reports:
    • Play-by-Play Report – Complete game log of all actions as a printable PDF.
    • Game Summary – High-level game overview with final score and key stats.
    • Goal Summary – Breakdown of all goals with strength type and assists.
    • Player Stats (Game) – Per-player stat breakdown for a selected game.
    • Goalie Report – Goalie-specific stats (saves, goals against, etc.).
    • Official Game Sheet – Formal game sheet suitable for league submission.
    • Leaderboard – Player rankings filtered by team and date range.
    • Team List – All teams.
    • Team + Players – Team rosters with player details.
    • Team Score History – Game scores over time.
    • Season Report – Season-long performance summary.
    • Highest Scoring Players – Top scorers at a glance.
  3. Select a game (or team/date range for Leaderboard), then tap Generate Report or Apply Filter.
  4. Reports are displayed as PDFs with built-in toolbar for printing and navigation.

Step 10: Customize Settings

  1. Tap Settings in the menu bar.
  2. Adjust defaults:
    • Game Type – Set the default game type.
    • Home Team – Set a default home team.
    • Jersey Color.
    • Date Picker Type.
  3. Switch to the Game Types tab to add or edit game formats.
  4. Switch to the Seasons tab to manage seasons.

Hockey Actions Reference

Hockey Trak tracks 11 game actions organized in 3 rows:

  • Offensive Actions (Blue):
    • Goal (G) – Puck crosses the goal line. Opens strength type + assist popup. Worth 1 point.
    • Shot on Goal (SOG) – Shot that would have scored if not saved.
    • Missed Shot (MS) – Shot that misses the net entirely.
    • Blocked Shot (BS) – Shot blocked by a defending skater.
  • Defensive / Puck Play Actions (Orange):
    • Save (SV) – Goalie stops a shot on goal.
    • Hit (HIT) – Legal body check against an opponent.
    • Takeaway (TA) – Puck stolen from the opposing team.
    • Giveaway (GA) – Puck lost to the opposing team.
  • Special Teams / Game Control Actions:
    • Penalty (PEN) – Infraction called. Opens duration + type popup.
    • Faceoff Win (FOW) – Won a faceoff.
    • Faceoff Loss (FOL) – Lost a faceoff.

Helpful Tips

  • Select Player First – Always tap a player before tapping an action button.
  • Quick Corrections – Tap a play in the Play-by-Play log and use Undo to reverse mistakes instantly.
  • Line Changes – Use the Swap button to manage line changes without leaving the stats screen.
  • Period Tracking – Change the period selector as the game progresses (1st, 2nd, 3rd, OT).
  • Game Clock – The clock counts down and can be manually adjusted at any time.
  • Goal Details – Take the extra second to record strength type and assists for more accurate reports.
  • Penalty Details – Recording the full penalty (duration + type) helps generate complete Official Game Sheets.
  • Reports After the Game – All stats are saved automatically. Generate reports anytime from the Reports menu.
